New Programs

Seeking sponsorship for

Curious Kids & Parents

and

Homework Rescue

In an effort to address the needs of our community, two new programs are in the planning stages:

Curious Kids & Parents is designed to support, teach and empower parents of at-risk preschoolers. Weekly sessions with children and their parent(s) provide a topic oriented presentation, activities, discussion, interactive group play, and snack.  One 90 minute session requires a $150 sponsorship.

Homework Rescue provides homework assistance and tutoring for at-risk middle and high school students while also providing a safe location for otherwise unsupervised after-school hours. Two-hour sessions are offered where students have access to experienced instructors, school supplies, computers and snacks. Each session requires a $150 sponsorship.

These programs will be provided at no cost to the community and the sponsorships are tax-deductible.

Please consider whether you know of an individual, business or organization willing to join our team of solution-seekers.Below is a link to an introductory letter for potential sponsors.

Did you see us in the Discover monthly publication?

If you’re concerned that your child may be struggling academically, consider connecting with the Student-Parent Assistance Network focusing on Guidance and Prevention (SPAN the GaP). Launched by special education teacher and advocate, Ruby Sotelo, and school psychologist, Cindy Hagenhoff, this organization provides affordable educational assessment and reporting for public and private school students as well as home-schooled children.

“We can give you an indicator of where your child is achieving and identify his or her needs and they can be addressed,” says Ruby, noting that in addition to providing assessment and tutoring services, SPAN the GaP is also geared toward pre-empting problems.

For Ruby, a crucial part of her job is working with parents, empowering them to become better advocates for their children. In addition, Ruby is bilingual in English and Spanish, expanding her reach to many local Latino children who speak English as a second language. “What I love most is working with these kids and families,” Ruby says. “We offer hope.”
