If you’re concerned that your child may be struggling academically, consider connecting with the Student-Parent Assistance Network focusing on Guidance and Prevention (SPAN the GaP). Launched by special education teacher and advocate, Ruby Sotelo, and school psychologist, Cindy Hagenhoff, this organization provides affordable educational assessment and reporting for public and private school students as well as home-schooled children.
“We can give you an indicator of where your child is achieving and identify his or her needs and they can be addressed,” says Ruby, noting that in addition to providing assessment and tutoring services, SPAN the GaP is also geared toward pre-empting problems.
For Ruby, a crucial part of her job is working with parents, empowering them to become better advocates for their children. In addition, Ruby is bilingual in English and Spanish, expanding her reach to many local Latino children who speak English as a second language. “What I love most is working with these kids and families,” Ruby says. “We offer hope.”
